Ingredients
1 to 2 fresh whole lemons
2–3 tbsp coarse sea salt or kosher salt
Small plate or ceramic saucer
Instructions
1. Slice each lemon into quarters from the top down, keeping the bottom base intact so the fruit stays connected in one piece.
2. Gently open the cut lemon sections and pack generous amounts of coarse salt into the center and over the exposed fruit.
3. Place the salted lemons upright on a small dish or saucer.
4. Set the dish in areas prone to stale smells—like the kitchen counter, refrigerator, or bathroom—to act as a natural room deodorizer. Replace every 3–5 days once the lemon begins to dry out.
How It Works
Odor Neutralization: Citrus releases limonene and natural essential oils that mask unpleasant scents, while coarse salt acts as a natural desiccant to absorb ambient moisture and trap floating room odors.
Preserved Lemons: This same method (layering quartered lemons with heavy salt tightly packed into a jar) is also the base technique for making Moroccan preserved lemons used in cooking.
