Boiling Water: Pouring a full kettle of boiling water over the lid and inside the bin kills maggots instantly on contact and washes them off.
Bleach or Vinegar Solution: Mix equal parts household bleach and warm water (or white vinegar and water for a non-toxic option) in a spray bottle or bucket, then douse the bin completely.
Dish Soap & Hot Water: Squirt a generous amount of Dawn (or any heavy-duty dish soap) mixed with scalding water over the top. The soap coats them and cuts through grease, killing them quickly.
Insecticide / Fly Spray: Any standard aerosol pest spray targeting flies or crawling insects will kill them on contact outside the bin.
Preventing Future Outbreaks
Double-Bag Meat & Food Scraps: Flies are attracted to moisture and decomposing food. Seal raw meat leftovers, bone scraps, or spoiled food in sealed ziplock bags or tightly tied grocery bags before tossing them into the bin.
Keep the Bin Dry: Maggots need moisture to survive. Drilling small drain holes at the bottom (if permitted by your waste provider) or placing a sheet of cardboard/newspaper at the bottom of the bin helps absorb liquid leaks.
Clean & Disinfect Regularly: Hose out the bin with detergent or disinfectant spray after pickup day to clear out residue.
Ensure a Tight Seal: Check if the lid shuts completely so flies can’t enter to lay eggs.
