DIY Powdered Eggshell Calcium
If you want to make a safe, low-cost calcium supplement at home, here is the proper sterilization and preparation recipe:
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Cook Time: 20 minutes
Yield: ~12 teaspoons of calcium powder
Ingredients & Tools
12 empty eggshells (preferably organic)
Pot of water
Coffee grinder, spice grinder, or high-powered blender
Fine mesh sieve
Airtight glass jar
Instructions
1. Clean: Rinse the eggshells under running water to clear out leftover egg whites. Do not remove the thin inner membrane, as it contains collagen and joint-supporting compounds.
2. Sterilize (Mandatory): Bring a pot of water to a boil. Submerge the eggshells and boil for 10 to 15 minutes to destroy bacteria such as Salmonella.
3. Dry: Drain the water. Spread the shells onto a baking sheet and bake at 200°F (95°C) for 10–15 minutes until completely dry and brittle.
4. Grind: Pulse the dry shells in a grinder until they turn into an extremely fine, flour-like powder.
5. Sift: Pass the powder through a fine mesh sieve to remove any sharp shell shards that could irritate your stomach or esophagus.
6. Store: Keep in an airtight jar in a cool, dry place for up to 1 month.
Usage & Safety Notes
Dosage: \frac{1}{2}\text{ teaspoon} provides roughly 800\text{–}1000\text{ mg} of elemental calcium. Mix a tiny pinch or up to \frac{1}{2}\text{ tsp} into smoothies, yogurt, or soups.
Consultation: Always check with a doctor before starting a calcium supplement, as excessive calcium intake can cause kidney stones or cardiovascular issues.
