Viral DIY skincare trends frequently circulate across social media platforms like TikTok and Facebook, claiming cheap kitchen ingredients can replace high-end anti-aging treatments. One widely shared hack involves mixing egg yolk with Vaseline (petroleum jelly) and covering the face in plastic wrap to achieve glowing, wrinkle-free skin.
While the “before and after” photos look impressive, dermatologists warn that this DIY mask isn’t the magic cure it appears to be.
What the Ingredients Actually Do
Vaseline (Petroleum Jelly): Vaseline is an occlusive agent, meaning it sits on top of the skin to lock in moisture and prevent transepidermal water loss. While it temporarily plumps skin by trapping existing hydration (a technique known as “slugging”), it does not repair collagen, erase deep wrinkles, or deliver nutrients deep into the dermal layers.
Egg Yolk: Egg yolks contain proteins, fatty acids, and vitamin A (retinol in trace amounts). Applying raw egg topically creates a temporary tightening film on the surface as it dries, which can make pores feel smaller and skin feel firmer for a brief period after rinsing.
Potential Risks & Disadvantages
Clogged Pores & Breakouts: Vaseline mixed with heavy fats from egg yolk creates a thick, suffocating barrier. For oily or acne-prone skin, this combination is highly comedogenic, trapping bacteria, dead skin, and sebum under plastic wrap, which often leads to severe breakouts.
Bacterial Infections: Raw eggs carry a risk of Salmonella and other harmful bacteria. Applying raw egg to facial skin—especially near the mouth, eyes, or open acne sores—can cause serious bacterial skin infections or irritation.
Temporary Illusion: The instant “glow” seen in viral photos is mostly leftover moisture trapped under petroleum jelly and light-reflecting oils, not genuine, long-term anti-aging transformation.
Dermatologist-Approved Alternatives for Glowing Skin
For Hydration: Use hyaluronic acid serums paired with light, non-comedogenic moisturizers.
For Wrinkles & Anti-Aging: Incorporate proven ingredients like topical retinoids (Retinol or Tretinoin), Vitamin C, and peptide creams into your daily routine.
For Barrier Protection: Stick to plain medical-grade Vaseline over a clean moisturizer at night (“slugging”), avoiding raw food ingredients entirely.
